Monolid Eyelining Guide - Find What’s Suitable!

If you have been following my makeup posts, you’ll notice my eyeliner is usually done in this style, with varying thickness and flicks at the end.

Thick, vibrant, unblended, and always black eyeliner, no browns, no grays. Somewhat Egyptian style-ish. I swear I won’t do the pursed lip thing again, make me look like lala wannabe. T.T

I have tried various methods of lining my single eyelids but unfortunately, not much suits my eyes. They simply don’t bring out my features.

But first, let’s take a look at my type of monolid.
As you can see, I have virtually no crease, inside out, nada. Some people HAVE a crease but are folded deep inside; some don’t. So you really must experiment to see what suits yourself!

It can occassionally fold up to a double eyelid too, which is freaking annoying and can hamper my makeup, making me look big-small eyed.

Ok I really hate it when that happens. Sibeh unnatural and not ‘me’.

As everyone of us is unique, we need to spend some time to find a style that suits you. What works for others may not suit you. So play around and have fun searching!

Monolid girls should also note that not all the rule of thumb in eye makeup will suit you. (Makeup has no rules actually - screw those ‘rule of thumbs’!)

This guide ought to show you how to gradually try each of the common methods, and make you find out WHAT actually rocks on your eyes, and what doesn’t.

I explored the 4 most basic and popular methods of lining the eyes, strewn in tutorials and guides all over the web.

Tightlining / Waterlining.

Claims to: emphasizes the eyes without looking overly made up because it darkens the lash line.

I lined my upper lash line with MAC’s Technakohl in Jealous. NO difference.
FAIL.

Line as close to the lashline as possible.

Claims to: make eyes look naturally bigger without looking overly made-up.

thin line by you.

Yeah, I’m VERY close, and the look is close to NOTHING too.
FAIL.

To create dramatic cat eyes, line as closely to your lashline as possible, ending with a flick at the outer corner of your eyes.

Claims to: create the sexy cat eye look.

flick by you.

Uh huh, flick, yeah. Dramatic? Nope.
FAIL.

To create a subtle and well-defined look without harsh lines, use eyeshadow to line your eyes instead.

Claims to: the most natural and fun way to play up the eyes.

color liner by you.

Eeeew. (I know this purple is not the darkest shade to line, but I only have pink, light gold, teal, this purple and a very light brown shadow with me in India. T.T 88 palette… T.T)
FAIL.

So after attempting these 4 most basic methods of eyelining, I have already banished them and went for my own style instead.
Just as these don’t work for me, they don’t necessarily NOT work for you. So the key is trying out!

For me, the ‘thing’ is to keep my black eyeliner intense and well-defined.

Very thick, well-defined line when you look down. I never smudge my liner because it doesn’t suit me.

I have found my style, but will keep on finding the best way to bring out the eyes - That’s the fun of makeup!

Now what are you waiting for? Take out your pencil, your gel liner, whatever, go and experiment! =D

very good tips, i will show this to my sis, she is always bugging me abt lining her monolid. her lid fold is very very heavy and the double lid is hidden deep deep deep underneath. when i line close to her lash line, it will fold inside when she opens her eyes -_- i had to draw like 1cm thick for the line to show up on her. LOL.

How do you keep your eyeliner from smudging? I like wearing mine as a thick line just on top. But in 30 minutes it will smudge a bit onto the bottom of my eyes, making it pointless that I even wear undereye concealer (But if I dont my circles will look even darker!)

pretty dear: wah, that’s a bit overboard. i think my sis-in-law has the type of eyelid you mentioned. i find that the outward flick suits her very well but not thick lining though. everyone is so different! :D

linh: hi dear, i dropped you an email. do a search on ‘Daiso’ and you’ll find i’ve written a review on Daiso’s eyeliner seal. it works perfectly to keep eyeliner intact!
