It’s a bit unnerving to explain what Public Relations exactly is to a father who is accustomed to defining things according to stereotypes.

I can’t really forget the grimace when he looked at my result slip. Printed atop, was a bright glowing A and a C for some stupid LAN subject which I can’t really be bothered. Shouldn’t any dad be proud? Aside from that LAN thingie? Yes. Any dad would.

But what he was grimacing was actually the words Diploma in Mass Communication (Public Relations). ‘Why you take Public Relations ah?!’

Here we go again. I’ve explained and explained a lot of times, it’s unnerving. Plus, dad being busy and forgetful doesn’t help. And, I do not want to say further to blog readers who assume people who study mass communication as idiots. Granted, we may not be studying rocket science, but that doesn’t mean we are a bunch of useless idiots. Anything that contributes to the society deserves a decent amount of respect by anybody. Even floor cleaners. If you ever grimace at them, then do NOT complain and STFU when you see rubbish on the floor. You do not respect the cleaner’s profession, so naturally you do not have the authority to blame that he didn’t do his job, so shut up. Coz it’s none of your business.

Ooops carried off liao. Anyway, my main point is…

I’ve been the butt of jokes during casual conversations between my dad and brother, both doing ‘respectable’ and ‘typical’ professional jobs in the eyes of the typical Bolehlander. ‘Send her to do this, do -insert typical non-professional jobs here- ah, she studying PR mah.’ It’s a very, very casual and offhand joke, which I don’t find funny nor am really offended. Main point is, it got my mind kicking.

Besides the offhand jokes, I also heard my dad saying that he wanna offer his professional services to potential bosses to the future.

Offering his services. Meaning, even though my dad is a boss running his own consulting firm, he still needs to succumb himself to servicing other people.

Even though you’re a professional person, you still service others and end up with a large pay, which may never rival what your boss earns.

I don’t want to end up in this route. Studying PR… I believe it can open up much more pathways for myself in the future. Plus the fact that I am ready to learn anything that comes by. Very unlike my dad’s belief of studying something ‘professional’ like a designer or whatnot and get a ’steady’ job, which is proving to be very impractical at times like now.

You’ve earned yourself the highest qualification of a field of work, but you’ll just be sitting in the office, doing something that you looked forward learning when you were young, only to sulk in the present, when you realise that it isn’t your most wanted dream, and you’re forever doomed to be sitting in that office, doing repetitive and uninspiring work. Of course, this does not apply to both my father and brother since they enjoy their work tremendously and have been achieving milestones in their field of work, although the petrol hikes are proving to be a pressure to about any sane person who wishes for a breakthrough and earn even more money. But the sight of working in the same office, doing the same thing is just not appealing to a more adventurous me.

Frankly, I am a tad bit annoyed at the shallow looks given to me when they hear about my subject of study. But for me… Studying the subject is just something to accomplish in this society. Without a paper certificate, where do you stand? You have absolutely no talking rights as people will look down upon someone who is not ‘qualified’, unless you are exceptionally talented individual, like Sufiah the girl who made Bolehland proud but wound up being a social escort *sarcasm sarcasm*.

Like my brother, who followed my dad’s path. Enjoying his field greatly. I’m not like that. I prefer to gain more experiences all over the place. Granted, I am not one who sits still for 10 seconds. :P

But does that equate that my studying PR will not lead to success like my father and brother? Nah, I don’t think so. I am thoroughly annoyed after thinking about the offhand jokes just now even though they do not seem to be offending at first. Sometimes being ‘professional’, where does that lead you? Working for yet another boss loh, even though you’re a professional. You earn big money, yet you just live a miserable life being kicked around by the top person. Likewise if you are in other fields, you might be successful and do not have to be dependent on bosses. Some successful people I know do not have the fanciest certificates, but they are doing more than any average graduate can achieve. Says who now? Who looks down upon ‘unprofessionals’ eh?! Kick your own butt lah.

I’ve gotta make a change, and prove my daddy wrong.

Provided I can kill the lazy bug within me, I think I’ll be shitting bricks for ya all to see.

Sorry for the lack of update peeps. Can one word suffice to make you forgive me?

It’s Screamyx, I tell ya.
