Voting System (Flaw) in Malaysian Dreamgirl.
Have you guys been watching Malaysian Dreamgirl? Yes, it’s yet another sassy spin-off from America’s (infamous) Next Top Model series where the audience get to bash the poor girls trying to chase their dreams in the hopes of becoming the next big shot.
The girl (or maybe camwhore-ism) genes within me kicked in, and i find myself chasing ANTM and MDG quite fervently, lol.
Right now I’m up to Episode 5 of MDG, and sadly to say, it’s proving to be disappointing. Nevermind the bad choreography of editing the reality shots of the girls. Since this show is relatively new, I’d give room for it to grow. But, since Alison got kicked out because of the (LAME!) least votes reason, that prompted me to say something about it.
How can such a nice girl brimming with personality and talent get kicked out?
And have it ever occurred to you all, how unfair is the voting system? For some background info obtained after finishing Episode 5, Alison’s friends are mostly based in her country of study (UK IIANM) and her social span has not been spread out far in Malaysia. There, you do the math.
No offense to Ringo and Cindy, who are both well-known bloggers. They could have easily leeched deserving votes from their readers. I dunno, some may feel guilty for not voting for a friend, some feel obliged to vote when their friends asked them to. I don’t blame these people. But I have a pretty fishy feeling that the winner is the person who gave us surprise buttshecks right from the start of the show. Why? It’s pretty obvious, you see.
Do you think any tom, dick or harry would know about the Malaysian Dreamgirl Reality Show, that can be viewed via Internet? And usually those who know about MDG, would naturally know about the famed Cheeserland (I enjoy reading her blog too, mind you). The Internet is a very small place to be honest. Plus, we’re in the age of the blossoming of blogging networks, it’s not that hard to obtain information via the network of bloggers that you enjoy reading.
So, to conclude what I wanted to say, I’d think Ringo will probably get a percentage of votes due to her blog, and NOT because of talent. That doesn’t make it fair competition to me anymore.
I’m gonna use tom, dick and harry again (he hee). You see, do you actually think Malaysians can ‘judge’ a potential model simply by looking at their pictures?! Just take forums for an example, they’re oozing with wolves just hungry for cute girls to buaya. That’s by far the most reasonable mentality that I can say to describe the typical Malaysian male. How many males actually have refined tastes to JUDGE whether a girl is suitable to be a high fashion model? Hardly any, IMHO.
I neither think the photos selected for the publics viewing are the best anyway. Did you all notice some pics are like ‘duh’ pictures of the gals? I don’t believe there aren’t any better pictures of them. At least don’t choose one that is so ‘blah’ for us to see, can?
Well, maybe the judging system IS fair, if the shows intention is to leech the Dreamgirl based on popularity. BUT, isn’t this a modeling contest? I want my winner to be judged based on talent, damn it. And I hope MDG better deliver well else the show will just downgrade to what buayas love - a show full of girls, and the PRETTIEST or SEXIEST wins, but not the one who actually DESERVES it because of their modeling potential.
*Runs away after so much ranting for fear of being beat up*
and oh, if I were to write a fact wrongly here, you’re welcome to shoot me, I am not done watching yet. Blame it on overwhelming emotions that made me write this so suddenly.

yahui, there are many different voters out there, some will vote based on talent some just because of beauty. it balances out in the end, just like any reality show.
you should make some constructive comments. the damn show is solely based on voting. not even the judges decision at all.
i believe voters know what they are voting about and for what reasons. if not BN wont get kicked out. if you’re even informed about our recent elections. BN = Barisan Nasional.
The show is about chasing someone ‘raw’, not from the industry. even the best gets ousted, its the unpredictability of reality tv that gets ppl glued to it. try to be mellow if youre shallow. or just hit the books.
Dear anon,
Balancing out in the end? Do remember this show is just broadcasted on the Internet, it’s unlike television where practically most of the nation can view what’s happening.
Indeed, it’s a reality show but bear in mind it’s also a model search contest and we as the viewers expect a certain level of credibility in it. in this case, how credible is the result? I don’t have to state the obvious, most of the people out there are already expecting one of the girls there to win, not out of her potential, but due to her fan base? How funny is that? Basically there wasn’t a clear line drawn right from the start of the competition, the MDG crew wanted it to be a model search contest based on popularity. This can mean pretty different things, so I guess the controversies are starting to emerge now.
This show is aired on the Internet, the whole world is watching. Imagine in order to ‘please’ the Malaysian audiences, and we had to choose the most undeserving girl just because she’s ‘popular’, what’s the whole point then?
And what’s with the Election thing? Do save yourself the trouble, I’m pretty well informed of the election results, thank you very much.
just wanna let u know that M’sia is a country where all people open their eyes and close their heart for money. I’m working in the media industry so I know what’s behind every reality show. Just take a look at the sponsorship below MDG’s page, the production house have to answer to them if the viewer-ship is bad and also the production house needs to earn some extra cash for bonus. Don’t take the show too seriously,it’s not worth it.
speaking of the sponsorship, i reckon it shouldn’t be a problem. Nuffnang is trying to spread publicity for the show through their network of bloggers, so they won’t fall short on that i think.
btw, i’m just voicing out my displeasure of the show, not taking it too personally, no offence if my article offended anyone. ;)
btw anon, you’re from the industry?! from which company may i ask? i’m a PR student, i guess i’ll be meddling with the media industry in the future too.
PS: are the two anons same?! @.@
